Brooklands Juniors is fortunate in having some excellent coaches - including current Brooklands players, ex-players, parents and some young adult players.

Profiles of our coaches can be found on the other tabs in this section.

If you are interested in joining our team of coaches, helping to manage one of our junior teams, or umpiring games, please contact us at

Ralph Yates

Ralph is actively involved with the club, managing the Ladies 1st team (he is the one on the left of  the photo) and coaching the U16 boys age group.

Ralph has been at the club since coming to study at Manchester University. He is a former Men's 1st team captain and has played in the Men’s National  Premier division. He has 2 children, both of who play hockey and a supportive wife who has just returned to playing hockey herself having attended the 'back to hockey' sessions on Tuesday night.

Stefan Ray-Hills

Stefan is one of our Brooklands First team players who coaches juniors players on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

For details of training times, please see see our training page

Matt Lakin-Hall

Matt has played hockey since 4 years old, and has played at Brooklands since moving to Manchester nearly 20 years ago.

Whilst at Brooklands, Matt has played mainly for the Mens 2nd Team, & captained the side for 3 seasons too.

Matt currently still plays for the 2nd Team and is in the England Over 35’s Squad.

He started coaching when his children started playing and Matt will lead our Uunder 11 &  Under 10’s squads and training this season.

David Hardern

David picked up a hockey stick for the first time at the age of 14 and played in the North Hockey leagues for the next 18 years.

He then switched to youth development, initially with 6 and 7 year olds at Timperley Hockey Club before establishing and growing their hockey academy.

David has been coaching Badgers and Beavers teams for over 16 years but has also coached senior teams, including taking one team to an England Hockey Cup Final.

David is currently an England Hockey accrediated 'Level 2' coach.

In addition to coaching at club level, David also coaches at county level. He established the Greater Manchester Boys Hockey Academy 8 years ago where he still coaches (and chairs the organisation).

David has 3 children, a long-suffering wife and works as a Relationship Manager for a major international bank - fitting in hockey on a volunteer basis.

Chris Binns

Chris has played hockey at Brooklands for more than thirty years, even reaching the 2nd team back in the mists of time. However, his greatest triumphs lay in guiding the "Mighty Thirds" on their all-conquering quest to dominate North West hockey, and to come runners-up in the national 3rd team play-offs, pipped in the final by Reading. Nowadays he 'graces' the lower reaches of the club hoping to help some of Generation Z in their hockey journey.

Chris got involved with the junior coaching when his children started playing, and after spending several years coaching our very youngest juniors, now assists Matt Lakin-Hall with coaching and running the Under 11s and Under 10s.

Chris’s coaching ethos is “keep it simple” with a mantra of “Brooklands forever”.

A photo of Chis is expected here soon..
